Winter is probably the worst time to be unprepared. You want your home to be cosy, warm and ready for the festive season. Here are some plumbing and heating tips to keep your home in its best condition.
Disconnect Hoses
It’s very easy to forget to disconnect your hose as summer drifts away. However, if you leave your hose in during winter it could cause a home leak.
This is due to water constantly sitting in the hose (even if it’s turned off) the cold can cause the water to freeze. If this isn’t fixed soon it can cause water pressure to build up inside the hose and cause a crack. Dependant on circumstances it could cause a home leak and mould growth.
Pipe Insulation
Pipe insulation is quite affordable and can be a simple step in preventing your pipe breaking or leaking. Although we encourage you get a professional to do any work, this can be done on your own.
Similar to the hose situation, if water is idle within the pipe the cold could freeze it and cause a crack/leak. Furthermore, depending on the pipe, the freeze could cause damage to your boiler.
You need to make sure the insulation is fitted properly and surrounds the entire pipe. If there is a rip or any gaps it could still cause your pipe to freeze.
Bleed Your Radiators
You may not realise it but if you haven’t bled out your radiator in a while, it could prevent heat travelling all the way up. This means your heating isn’t working as efficiently therefore possibly making you pay more on your energy bills.
A good indicator that your radiator needs bleeding is if your radiator is making a weird gurgling noise. Even if the radiator is heating up it should be silent, also by carefully feeling them is way to tell.
If your radiator feels hot at the bottom but not at the top, your radiator needs bleeding.
